Jean Mahoney has lived in Southampton since 2001, yet it has been her summer place since childhood. Then as now, the beauty that surrounds the east end is a constant source of inspiration. The sky, the ocean, the farm fields are an ever-changing palette of color and mood.

Her paintings are the end result of direct observation, on site drawings, watercolor sketches and photos which she redesigns and completes in her studio. She travels with watercolors and Iphone, especially for figurative paintings. What’s observed in a split second is reinterpreted on canvas. The memory and emotion of that moment becomes part of the mix. She hopes that evocation connects the viewer and the painting.

She has worked as an art director, graphic designer, author and is the creator of the books, The Nutcracker Ballet Theatre, The Sleeping Beauty Ballet Theatre, The Swan Lake Ballet Theatre, Japanese Accents in Western Interiors, At Home With Japanese Design and Nature on View.

An art major, she continued studies at the Art Students League, School of Visual Arts, Laguna Gloria Museum, Delaware Art Museum and Silvermine Guild with exhibits in Japan and Singapore, and locally in Manhasset, Southampton, Watermill, East Hampton, Springs and Remsenburg.

She is a member of The Wednesday Group of plein air painters, The Southampton Artists Assoc. and the Watermill Museum.
